The Academy Awards are a celebration of the best in film, and we love to see what movies were nominated for Best Picture that never made it into theatres. Here are some amazing Oscar nominated movies that never made it to theatres.
1) The Great Gatsby (2013)
Director Baz Luhrmann’s adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic novel was one of the most anticipated films of 2013. It starred Leonardo DiCaprio as Jay Gatsby, Carey Mulligan as Daisy Buchanan, Tobey Maguire as Nick Carraway, Joel Edgerton as Tom Buchanan, Isla Fisher as Myrtle Wilson, Elizabeth Debicki as Jordan Baker, Jason Clarke as Meyer Wolfsheim, Michael Stuhlbarg as George Wilson, and many more. This movie is considered by many critics to be one of the greatest adaptations ever made. Unfortunately, this version of The Great Gatsby didn’t make it to theaters. 2) Amadeus (1984)
One of the greatest movies of all time has got to be Miloš Forman’s Amadeus. Starring Meryl Streep, Peter Gallagher, John Malkovich, Robert Shaw, Anthony Perkins, and Jim Piddock among others, this story follows an aspiring young composer who gets caught up in the world of opera. The film won five Oscars including Best Director for Forman, Best Original Screenplay for Peter Shaffer, and Best Supporting Actor for John Malkovich. Sadly, this version of Amadeus also did not get released in theaters.
3) The Aviator (2004)
Tom Cruise plays Howard Hughes, an eccentric billionaire who builds planes at his estate in Beverly Hills, California. He is known for his temper, gambling360 casino games, drinking problem, and obsession with sex. The Aviator tells the true story behind the making of Hughes’ legendary 1927 transcontinental flight from Los Angeles to New York City. The cast includes Cate Blanchett, Alec Baldwin, Paul Bettany, Shirley MacLaine, Christopher Plummer, Matt Damon, Kate Hudson, and John Travolta. The film received eight nominations, but lost out on everything except for Best Sound Editing.
4) The Artist (2011)
Michel Hazanavicius’ biopic about silent film star Jean Harlow stars Berenice Bejo, James Cromwell, Emma Thompson, Thomas Hayden Church, Penelope Cruz, Billy Crudup, Jude Law, Helen Mirren, Albert Finney, and Alan Rickman. The film focuses on how Harlow became one of Hollywood’s biggest stars before her untimely death at age 27 due to complications from pneumonia.
